Micron’s Record-Setting $1 Trillion Run Draws Comparisons to Nvidia’s AI Ascent

Micron Technology has raced to a $1 trillion market valuation in 2026, reaching the milestone just 48 days after crossing $500 billion — the fastest such climb on record. The memory chipmaker’s shares, trading at $1,016.59 on Monday, rose 6.58% from the prior close of $953.84, according to market data.

The surge reflects a broader boom in AI-driven demand for memory. Micron’s business is benefiting from a supply shortage in memory chips, a dynamic that has tightened as data center operators race to build out artificial intelligence infrastructure. The stock has gained 1,860% since the AI boom began in January 2023, according to the commentary that sparked the latest round of comparisons.

Those comparisons inevitably turn to NVIDIA, which in 2025 became the first company to reach a $5 trillion market cap as AI demand transformed its data center accelerator business. NVIDIA remains the world’s most valuable company, and its shares — last at $223.67, down 0.73% on the day — sit atop a market cap of roughly $5.56 trillion. NVIDIA’s stock has added 1,390% since January 2023.

Micron, which designs and sells memory and storage products across its Cloud Memory, Core Data Center, mobile and other business units, now holds a market cap of approximately $1.15 trillion. The gap between the two semiconductor giants remains wide, but Micron’s pace of value creation this year has drawn attention across the industry as memory prices climb amid constrained supply.

Whether Micron can sustain its trajectory toward the valuations NVIDIA commands is a question analysts are actively debating. Memory markets have historically been cyclical, with pricing swings that can swing sharply in both directions — a dynamic that shaped the industry long before the current AI investment cycle. For now, the company sits at the center of one of the tightest memory markets in years, with cloud providers and data center builders competing for supply.

What to watch

  • Micron’s upcoming earnings report and any updates on memory pricing and data center demand.
  • Management guidance on how long the current memory supply shortage may persist.
  • Cloud providers’ capital expenditure plans, which drive demand for Micron’s cloud memory products.
  • NVIDIA’s quarterly results, a bellwether for the broader AI infrastructure buildout that underpins memory demand.
