Google Commits to 396 MW of Geothermal Power in Expanded Fervo Energy Partnership

The race to power artificial intelligence data centers has pushed some of the world’s largest technology companies to look beyond conventional energy sources, and Google is once again turning to the heat beneath the Earth’s surface.

Alphabet‘s Google has signed a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement with geothermal developer Fervo Energy, a substantial scale-up of a partnership that began with a pilot project several years ago. The deal is designed to secure long-term, round-the-clock clean electricity for Google’s expanding data center footprint, which has been growing rapidly to support AI workloads.

Why geothermal matters for AI infrastructure

Data center operators face a tightening power squeeze. Grid interconnection queues have stretched for years in key markets, and utilities are contending with rising demand from both industrial customers and households wary of higher electricity bills. Geothermal energy offers a rare combination of attributes: it is carbon-free and, unlike wind and solar, available around the clock — a critical feature for facilities that cannot tolerate downtime.

For Fervo, the agreement represents one of the largest commercial commitments yet for next-generation geothermal, a sector that uses drilling techniques adapted from the oil and gas industry to unlock geothermal resources in more locations than traditional plants allow. Landing a marquee buyer like Google gives the company a high-profile reference customer as it looks to scale its project pipeline.

Google, meanwhile, has made clean-energy procurement a centerpiece of its data center strategy, and this deal adds significant capacity to a portfolio that already included earlier geothermal purchases from Fervo. Alphabet shares closed at $342.93 previously and traded down about 1.3% to roughly $338.46, valuing the company at approximately $4.14 trillion.

What to watch

  • Timelines for construction and delivery of the 396 MW of geothermal capacity, and whether Fervo hits its project milestones.
  • Whether other hyperscale cloud providers follow with large geothermal power purchase agreements of their own.
  • Google’s upcoming earnings reports for commentary on data center capacity expansion and energy procurement costs.
  • Regulatory and grid-connection developments in the markets where Fervo plans to build.
