Alphabet Extends Monthly Losing Streak Despite Accelerating Fundamentals

Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) has logged four consecutive months of declines, with May through August each finishing below the prior month — the Google parent’s longest such stretch in roughly a decade, dating back to 2015.

The pullback has left shares well off their recent peak. GOOGL traded near $338.46 in Monday’s session, down about 1.3% and sitting roughly 18% below the 52-week high of $408.61 reached in mid-May. Class C shares (NASDAQ:GOOG) fell a similar 1.26% to around $335.31. Even so, Alphabet’s market capitalization remains above $4 trillion, at roughly $4.14 trillion based on GOOGL shares outstanding.

What makes the slide notable is the disconnect from the company’s operating results. Alphabet’s second-quarter report, released in late July, showed revenue growth accelerating and profit margins expanding — a combination that typically supports, rather than pressures, a stock price.

The divergence highlights a broader pattern for mega-cap technology names in the current market environment, where sentiment around AI spending, advertising demand, and valuation levels has at times outweighed quarterly fundamentals. Alphabet operates through its Google Services, Google Cloud, and Other Bets segments, with advertising remaining the core revenue driver while cloud computing has become an increasingly important growth and margin contributor.

For now, investors appear to be weighing whether the four-month downtrend reflects a sector-wide repricing of large-cap internet platforms or company-specific concerns, given that the underlying business metrics point the other direction.

What to watch

  • Alphabet’s third-quarter earnings report, expected in late October, including revenue growth and margin trends.
  • Whether the monthly decline streak extends or breaks with September’s close.
  • Google Cloud growth and AI-related capital expenditure commentary on the next earnings call.
  • Any updates on the company’s Other Bets segment and regulatory developments affecting Google Services.
