AI Data Center Boom Pits Connectivity Chipmaker Astera Labs Against Equipment Giant Applied Materials

The race to build artificial intelligence infrastructure has created winners at very different layers of the technology stack, and few comparisons illustrate that better than Astera Labs and Applied Materials. One company designs the chips that shuttle data inside AI-focused data centers; the other manufactures the equipment used to fabricate semiconductors in the first place. Both are positioned to benefit from the current buildout, but their businesses look little alike.

Astera Labs, which trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker ALAB, specializes in high-speed connectivity hardware and software for cloud and AI infrastructure. Its portfolio centers on PCIe and Ethernet-based solutions that help hyperscale cloud operators move enormous volumes of data between processors — the internal plumbing that keeps AI clusters running at full utilization. Shares were changing hands at $292.21 in recent trading, up 3.25% from the prior close of $283.00, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $57.4 billion.

That valuation reflects rapid growth expectations for a company that only recently went public, but it also comes with a notable caveat. In its most recent annual report, covering the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, Astera Labs disclosed that a single end customer accounted for more than 70% of revenue. Concentration of that magnitude means results can swing sharply based on the purchasing decisions of one dominant customer, even as overall demand for AI connectivity remains strong.

Applied Materials, by contrast, sits further upstream. The company sells deposition, etch, and inspection tools to chipmakers worldwide, making it a bellwether for semiconductor capital spending generally rather than AI connectivity specifically. For investors weighing the two, the choice is essentially between a focused, fast-growing specialist riding the AI data center buildout and a diversified equipment incumbent whose fortunes track the broader chip manufacturing cycle.

Both names appear in an ongoing analysis by The Motley Fool examining which stock is the stronger performer heading into 2026, a comparison that highlights how differently the two companies are exposed to the same underlying AI spending wave.

What to watch

  • Astera Labs’ next quarterly earnings report, particularly any update on customer concentration and hyperscale orders.
  • Whether hyperscale cloud capital expenditure plans for AI infrastructure continue to expand into 2026.
  • Semiconductor equipment spending trends and WFE (wafer fab equipment) demand signals relevant to Applied Materials’ orders.
  • Any new product announcements in PCIe and Ethernet connectivity from Astera Labs targeting next-generation AI clusters.
