Microsoft’s Xbox Steps In to Publish Hideo Kojima’s ‘Physint’ Following Sony’s Exit

Xbox has taken over publishing duties for Physint, the secretive espionage-themed project from acclaimed designer Hideo Kojima, according to a report from Engadget. The move comes after Sony, which had been attached to the title, withdrew from the project.

Kojima, best known for creating the Metal Gear series and founding his own independent studio after leaving Konami, has maintained a complicated relationship with platform holders. His studio previously partnered with Sony for Death Stranding and its follow-up, making Sony’s exit from Physint a notable shift in the project’s trajectory.

Physint was first announced several years ago, with Kojima describing it as a return to the tactical-espionage genre that defined much of his career. Few gameplay or story details have emerged since the initial reveal, and the project remains without a release date.

For Sony, the withdrawal adds a wrinkle to its first-party content strategy at a time when exclusive titles are a key differentiator in the console market. Shares of Sony Group Corporation closed down 1.44% at $24.56, after closing the prior session at $24.92. The company, whose market capitalization stands at roughly $131.25 billion, operates across consumer electronics and entertainment, including its PlayStation gaming division.

The details of Xbox’s publishing arrangement, including whether the game will remain exclusive to Microsoft platforms or appear on other systems, have not been fully disclosed. Kojima’s studio has historically been willing to bring its titles to multiple platforms over time, as seen with Death Stranding arriving on PC after its PlayStation debut.

The deal underscores the ongoing competition among platform holders to secure high-profile creative talent. Microsoft has invested heavily in partnerships with independent studios in recent years as it builds out its first-party portfolio, while Sony continues to lean on its own internal studios alongside selective outside collaborations.

Neither party has publicly explained why Sony stepped away from the project, and timelines for development remain unclear. Kojima is also juggling other projects at his studio, which could further influence when Physint eventually reaches players.

What to watch

  • Any official announcement from Xbox or Kojima Productions confirming platform exclusivity and release windows for Physint.
  • Upcoming Xbox and PlayStation showcase events, where first looks or updates on the title could appear.
  • Updates on Kojima Productions’ other announced projects, which may affect Physint‘s development timeline.
  • Sony’s next earnings report, which may include commentary on its content partnerships and first-party pipeline.
