Jensen Huang’s June Call on the Tech Sell-Off: How It Has Played Out So Far

Jensen Huang’s June Call on the Tech Sell-Off: How It Has Played Out So Far

Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang weighed in during the sharp early-June technology pullback, telling reporters in Seoul that the artificial intelligence infrastructure build-out remained in an early stage and that the downturn represented a chance to acquire shares at reduced prices. Roughly three months later, the numbers suggest the timing worked out well for the semiconductor giant.

Between the market open on June 8 and the close of trading on Sept. 4, Nvidia shares rose approximately 9.6%, according to the publication’s analysis. That outpaced the broader market: the S&P 500 gained roughly 3.7% over the same stretch. The comparison frames Nvidia’s rebound as materially stronger than the index during a period when the technology sector was recovering from its June jitters.

The path was not a straight line, however. As the analysis notes, Nvidia’s stock did not rally immediately after Huang’s comments, meaning investors who acted on the CEO’s remarks had to sit through continued volatility before the gains materialized.

Nvidia, which describes itself as a data center scale AI infrastructure company with operations spanning the United States, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Europe and other international markets, has been at the center of the AI spending cycle. The company operates through two segments, Compute & Networking and Graphics, with the former supplying the accelerators that underpin much of the industry’s data center build-out.

In current trading, Nvidia shares changed hands at $223.67, down 0.73% from the prior close of $225.31, valuing the company at roughly $5.56 trillion. The stock’s movement continues to be closely watched as a bellwether for AI-related sentiment across the technology sector.

Huang’s June remarks are a reminder of how closely investors track executive commentary during market drawdowns — and how a CEO’s public framing of a sell-off can become a reference point when performance is measured months later. They are also a reminder that high-profile calls carry no guarantee: the initial post-comment period saw no immediate uplift, and the eventual gains arrived only after weeks of choppy trading.

As always, the outcome of a single quarter says little about longer-term performance, and market conditions can shift quickly. Readers should treat any executive’s public market commentary as one data point among many rather than a directive.

What to watch

  • Nvidia’s next quarterly earnings report and any updates to data center revenue guidance.
  • Announcements regarding AI infrastructure orders or new accelerator product cycles.
  • Broader technology sector volatility, which shaped the June dip and subsequent recovery.
  • Further public comments from Nvidia leadership on the state of the AI build-out.
