Intel’s Altera Unit Reportedly Weighing an IPO as Soon as This Year

Altera, the programmable-chip business majority owned by Intel, is preparing for a public listing that could arrive as early as this year, according to a report from Seeking Alpha. The move would mark a notable step in Intel’s efforts to streamline its portfolio and unlock value from units that sit outside its core PC and data center operations.

Altera, which specializes in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), was acquired by Intel in a deal that closed in 2015 under then-CEO Brian Krzanich. Intel later sold a majority stake in the business to private equity firm Silver Lake, retaining a minority interest, as part of a broader restructuring effort under CEO Lip-Bu Tan. An IPO of the unit would give public-market investors direct exposure to the FPGA business while allowing Intel to reduce its ownership over time.

News of the listing plans arrived alongside a strong trading session for Intel’s stock. Shares of Intel Corporation rose 4.72% to $95.80 in recent trading, up from a prior close of $91.48, giving the chipmaker a market capitalization of roughly $423 billion. The stock’s gains suggest investors responded favorably to developments that point toward portfolio simplification at the semiconductor giant.

The FPGA market has become increasingly strategic as demand grows for customizable silicon used in data centers, networking equipment, industrial automation, and defense systems. Altera competes primarily with AMD, which acquired rival FPGA maker Xilinx in 2022, and a public listing would allow the company to raise capital and operate with greater independence in that competitive landscape.

For Intel, the timing coincides with an ongoing turnaround effort focused on its foundry business and cost discipline. Divesting or partially separating non-core assets has been a recurring theme in the company’s strategy as it works to strengthen its balance sheet and concentrate investment on manufacturing and core compute products.

What to watch

  • Any formal filing by Altera for an initial public offering, including an S-1 registration statement
  • Intel’s next quarterly earnings report, where management may address the timing and structure of the listing
  • Details on how much of its stake Intel intends to sell and whether it will retain a controlling or minority position
  • Broader IPO market conditions, which will influence whether the listing proceeds this year or is pushed to 2026
