Fall Vaccine Season Arrives on Schedule Despite Federal Turmoil

The annual push for respiratory virus vaccinations is underway, with updated flu and COVID-19 shots cleared by regulators and already reaching pharmacy shelves across the country — even as the federal health apparatus overseeing vaccine policy remains in disarray.

A turbulent backdrop at HHS

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a longtime vaccine skeptic, has moved aggressively to reshape federal immunization policy since taking office. Early in his tenure, his department scrapped a government advertising campaign promoting flu shots during a severe influenza season. This fall, Kennedy has also faced scrutiny over his public characterization of measles deaths in infants this year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s vaccine advisory committee — the panel whose recommendations typically shape both clinical guidance and insurance coverage for immunizations — is effectively sidelined. A federal judge ruled in March that several members Kennedy installed on the committee were improperly appointed and unfit to serve, and all policy changes those members made have been put on hold pending further legal proceedings.

The rollout itself looks routine

Against that chaotic backdrop, the practical vaccine effort appears to be proceeding largely as it did last fall. The Food and Drug Administration has approved updated formulations of both the influenza vaccine for the 2026–2027 season and the COVID-19 shots for use in the United States beginning this fall.

Updated COVID-19 vaccines have already begun arriving at major pharmacy chains, including Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy locations, with MinuteClinic sites also stocking doses. Many consumers are receiving automated reminders from their pharmacies prompting them to schedule appointments for the new shots.

Access is not entirely friction-free. Some snags remain in how the vaccines are distributed and covered, and the weakened advisory committee structure could complicate questions around recommendations and reimbursement later in the season. Still, officials and observers describe the overall rollout as likely to be broadly similar to last year’s — potentially unremarkable, which given the circumstances may count as the best-case outcome.

Health authorities continue to encourage Americans to get both updated flu and COVID-19 vaccinations ahead of the winter respiratory virus season, which historically peaks in the late fall and winter months.

What to watch

  • Resolution of the legal challenges over the CDC vaccine advisory committee’s membership and whether its policy decisions are reinstated or rewritten.
  • Insurance coverage determinations for the updated COVID-19 shots in the absence of a functioning advisory committee recommendation process.
  • Supply and appointment availability of updated flu and COVID-19 vaccines at retail pharmacies through the fall.
  • Early influenza and COVID-19 surveillance data as the respiratory virus season ramps up in the coming months.
