Doctors Link Boy’s “Toasted Skin” Rash to Daily Laptop Use

A pair of UK physicians has documented an unusual skin condition in a young patient whose daily laptop habit left visible, lace-like discoloration across his abdomen — a case that highlights a rarely discussed physical downside of extended device use.

The report, published in BMJ Case Reports by doctors Mara Znagoveanu and Edward Artley, describes a boy in “mid-childhood” who arrived at an emergency department with a patch of flat, reddish-brown markings roughly 15 centimeters (six inches) across. The lesion featured interlacing lines forming irregular circles with what the authors characterized as a lace-like pattern.

A puzzling presentation

Notably, the boy experienced no pain, and the affected skin was neither warm to the touch nor tender. He and his family could not recall any injury or trauma that might account for the marks. He had no fever, fatigue, or other systemic symptoms, no recent illness, and an otherwise unremarkable medical history and growth pattern.

The condition — sometimes informally called “toasted skin syndrome” — is associated with prolonged, repeated exposure to low-level heat sources, such as a laptop’s heat vents resting against skin during extended use. Physicians have long advised caution about resting hot devices directly on the body for extended periods, particularly for children, whose skin may be more susceptible to heat-induced changes.

Worries about electronics affecting children’s health are hardly new; concerns about screens have circulated for decades. But this case underscores a more direct, physical mechanism: cumulative heat exposure from hardware itself rather than anything related to screen time or content.

The case arrives as the consumer electronics and data-center hardware industries continue to grapple with thermal management more broadly. Chipmakers and device makers invest heavily in cooling designs, while energy-intensive computing operators face their own heat challenges at scale. Among publicly traded companies in the digital infrastructure space, MARA Holdings (NASDAQ: MARA) — which pairs Bitcoin mining with AI compute to monetize energy and power infrastructure — traded at $11.31, down 1.65% from its previous close of $11.50, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $4.67 billion. The stock sits within the financial services sector, capital markets industry classification.
