Cisco teams with Infleqtion to push quantum networking development
Cisco Systems and quantum technology firm Infleqtion have announced a partnership aimed at advancing quantum networking, pairing Cisco’s communications infrastructure expertise with Infleqtion’s work on quantum systems. The collaboration targets breakthroughs in connecting quantum devices over networks, an area seen as a key step toward practical, large-scale quantum computing.
Quantum networking remains an early-stage field, but the ability to link quantum processors and distribute quantum-secure communications is increasingly viewed as a strategic priority for networking equipment makers. For Cisco, the deal extends its research footprint beyond classical networking into next-generation infrastructure.
Market snapshot
Shares of Cisco Systems traded at $109.58, up 0.2% from a previous close of $109.36, valuing the communication equipment maker at roughly $456.65 billion. Infleqtion shares changed hands at $12.85, a 1.42% gain from the prior close of $12.67, with a market capitalization near $2.90 billion.
Elsewhere in the quantum-adjacent space, Quantum Corporation, which focuses on data management solutions for unstructured data, slipped 1.13% to $24.24 from a previous close of $24.52, putting its market cap at about $955.3 million.
Why networking matters for quantum
While much attention in quantum computing centers on processors and qubit counts, networking is emerging as a differentiator. Connecting quantum systems across distances could enable distributed quantum computation and quantum key distribution for security applications — a natural fit for an established networking vendor like Cisco.
The partnership also reflects a broader pattern of large technology companies aligning with specialized quantum firms rather than building all capabilities internally, allowing incumbents to gain exposure to the technology while startups access scale and distribution.
What to watch
- Milestones from the Cisco–Infleqtion collaboration, including demonstrations of quantum networking technology or commercialization timelines.
- Cisco’s next quarterly earnings report, where management may address its quantum and advanced research spending.
- Additional partnerships or government contracts in the quantum networking space involving either company.
