Broadcom Shares Trade Well Off Their Highs After a Decade of Enormous Gains

Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) has pulled back sharply from its recent peak, with shares changing hands near $364.38 in Monday trading, down 0.56% from the prior close of $366.42. The stock sits roughly 26% below its 52-week high of $495, even as the chipmaker’s market capitalization remains near $1.99 trillion.

The most recent slide followed the company’s fiscal third-quarter report on Sept. 2. While Broadcom posted record quarterly results, its fourth-quarter revenue outlook of roughly $34.8 billion came in just under the $35 billion analysts had anticipated — a narrow miss that was enough to pressure the shares.

Zooming out, the drawdown looks modest against the company’s long-term trajectory. In early September 2016, Broadcom shares closed at $16.08 on a split-adjusted basis, reflecting the 10-for-1 stock split the company completed in 2024. By the end of last week, the stock closed at $357.89 — more than 22 times its level a decade earlier.

For a hypothetical investor, the math is striking: a $10,000 position purchased at that 2016 price would be worth approximately $222,000 today, before accounting for any dividends received along the way.

The episode underscores the tension between Broadcom’s long-term performance and near-term expectations. The company, which operates across semiconductor solutions and infrastructure software, has benefited from heavy demand tied to networking and custom silicon used in AI data centers. But with a valuation approaching the $2 trillion mark, the market has shown little patience for guidance that falls even slightly short of consensus — as the soft reaction to the Sept. 2 report demonstrated.

What to watch

  • Whether Broadcom’s actual fourth-quarter revenue, due when the company reports fiscal Q4 results, lands above or below the ~$34.8 billion guidance and the $35 billion consensus figure.
  • Any updates on AI-related semiconductor demand and custom accelerator programs in upcoming earnings commentary.
  • Further movement in the share price relative to the $495 52-week high as new quarterly data arrives.
