AppLovin and Reddit Take Different Paths to Monetizing Digital Attention

Two of the more closely watched names in digital media are approaching the same opportunity — capturing advertising dollars online — from opposite ends of the market. AppLovin builds AI-driven advertising infrastructure aimed primarily at mobile app publishers, while Reddit monetizes a sprawling network of user-generated communities through ads and data licensing.

AppLovin’s core offering centers on its Axon Ads Manager and MAX tools, which help advertisers reach more than a billion people each day across the mobile gaming ecosystem. According to its annual report for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2024, the company has been pushing beyond gaming into e-commerce advertising. That strategic pivot followed the June 2025 divestiture of its Apps business, a move that leaves AppLovin concentrated entirely on its higher-margin software platform.

Reddit, by contrast, monetizes attention directly. Its forums draw users who discuss hobbies, research products, and exchange goods and services, giving advertisers a deeply engaged audience. Beyond advertising, the company has pursued data-licensing arrangements that turn its conversation archives into a revenue stream.

Market snapshot

The two stocks occupy the same sector — Communication Services — but differ meaningfully in scale. AppLovin, classified in the advertising agencies industry, traded at $314.04, up 2.84% from a prior close of $305.38, valuing the company at roughly $112.3 billion. Reddit, an internet content and information company, closed at $154.46, down 0.86% from $155.80, with a market capitalization of about $34.9 billion.

That gap underscores how differently the market is pricing the two models: AppLovin’s advertising-software engine has driven a valuation more than three times that of Reddit, even as the latter’s community platform continues to expand its commercial footprint.

For observers weighing the two, the comparison increasingly comes down to business model rather than sector. AppLovin sells tools to other advertisers and publishers, making its fortunes somewhat tied to overall mobile ad spending. Reddit owns its audience directly, but must balance ad load and user experience while scaling newer revenue lines such as licensing.
