Apple Opens GymKit to iPhone and AirPods in iOS 27

Apple is widening access to GymKit, its gym-equipment connectivity platform, with iOS 27 bringing support beyond the Apple Watch for the first time. According to a report from Engadget, iPhone users — and potentially those wearing AirPods — will be able to pair directly with compatible cardio machines without needing Apple’s wearable.

GymKit launched as an NFC-based feature that let an Apple Watch tap against a treadmill, elliptical, or stationary bike to exchange data. Once connected, the watch could pull accurate metrics like calories burned and distance directly from the machine, while workout data flowed back into the Activity rings. Despite partnerships with equipment makers such as Life Fitness and Technogym, adoption in gyms has remained limited, and the feature has long been tied to the Watch hardware alone.

Extending GymKit to the iPhone changes the calculus for the many gym-goers who work out without a watch. An iPhone tap-to-pair flow could deliver machine-accurate stats to the Fitness app, while AirPods integration suggests audio-related interactions — potentially workout cues or coaching — could become part of the connected experience. The details of exactly what the iPhone and AirPods versions will and won’t do remain an open question as Apple has not fully documented the new capabilities.

The move lands as Apple continues to position fitness as a growth area for its services and ecosystem, with the Fitness app now available on iPhone independent of the Watch. It also arrives amid a challenging stretch for the company’s shares: Apple (AAPL) traded at $315.34, down 0.84% from a previous close of $318.00, valuing the consumer electronics giant at roughly $4.6 trillion.

For consumers, the practical benefit hinges on hardware availability in gyms — GymKit-enabled machines are still far from ubiquitous, and it may take time for equipment manufacturers to update their fleets to recognize iPhones. Until then, iOS 27’s GymKit expansion is best viewed as groundwork that lowers the barrier to entry for a feature that has existed for years but reached relatively few users.
