Meta Platforms Redirects Vast Majority of Quarterly Cash Toward AI Infrastructure
Shares of Meta Platforms retreated in extended trading Wednesday following the release of the company’s second-quarter financial results. As of the latest market check, the stock was down 1.97% for the session, trading at $585.61 with a market capitalization of approximately $1.51 trillion.
The social media conglomerate reported a significant jump in total revenue, which climbed 28% year over year to reach $60.8 billion. This growth was fueled by the company’s advertising segment, which saw gains in both pricing power and volume. Despite the top-line performance, investor attention quickly shifted to the company’s cash allocation strategy.
During the quarter, Meta generated $31.9 billion in cash from operations. However, the company reported retaining only $784 million as free cash flow. The disparity between operating cash flow and free cash flow indicates that the company deployed the vast majority of its generated capital back into the business.
According to the report, the primary destination for these funds was the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This heavy capital expenditure highlights the company’s ongoing strategy to invest aggressively in the hardware and systems necessary to support its AI initiatives, leaving little liquidity on the balance sheet after these expenses.
