TSMC and ASML Dominate the AI Chip Supply Chain

The artificial intelligence boom rests heavily on the shoulders of a few critical infrastructure players, with ASML and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing serving as linchpins in the global ecosystem. ASML maintains a unique position in the industry by supplying the lithography systems required to manufacture advanced semiconductors, effectively holding a monopoly on the essential machinery used to produce cutting-edge logic chips. Meanwhile, TSMC utilizes this equipment to act as the primary foundry for the world’s most powerful graphics processing units (GPUs) and high-performance central processing units (CPUs).

Market data highlights the sheer scale of these operations. ASML Holding N.V., currently trading around $1,747.58 after a slight decline of 1.03%, commands a market capitalization of approximately $688 billion. This valuation underscores the market’s reliance on the company’s extreme ultraviolet lithography and metrology systems, which are prerequisites for modern chip fabrication.

While ASML provides the tools, TSMC operates the facilities where the actual manufacturing takes place. Analysts often point to TSMC’s “virtual monopoly” on advanced logic nodes as a key differentiator, arguing that the foundry model allows it to capture value directly from the surge in AI demand. The symbiotic relationship between the two firms is critical; without ASML’s equipment, TSMC cannot produce its most advanced products, and without TSMC’s capacity, chip designers lack a manufacturing partner.

The competitive landscape suggests that both entities are structurally essential to the semiconductor value chain. ASML’s dominance in equipment creates high barriers to entry for potential rivals, just as TSMC’s capital expenditure and expertise secure its lead in contract manufacturing. Consequently, both companies are viewed as foundational players in the ongoing expansion of AI infrastructure.

What to watch

  • Upcoming capital expenditure guidance from foundries regarding AI-related capacity.
  • ASML’s lithography system order backlog and shipment timelines.
  • Product launch schedules for next-generation GPUs and high-performance CPUs.
