Meta Targets Expanded Infrastructure with Custom Iris Chip Launch

Meta Platforms is moving forward with significant enhancements to its infrastructure capabilities. According to an internal memo, the company plans to initiate production of its proprietary data center artificial intelligence chip, known as Iris, in September. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to substantially increase the firm’s computing power in the coming years.

The roadmap outlines a goal to double the company’s data center capacity to 14 gigawatts by 2027. This expansion reflects the immense energy and processing requirements associated with training and deploying advanced AI models. By developing its own silicon, Meta aims to optimize the performance of its hardware while managing the costs associated with its heavy capital expenditures.

Financially, the technology giant is currently experiencing some volatility. Meta Platforms saw its stock price decline by 3.11% today, settling at $646.01. The company holds a market capitalization of approximately $1.67 trillion and operates within the Communication Services sector, specifically in Internet Content & Information.

While Meta Platforms trades at a valuation that some observers consider lower than high-flying AI peers, the company is aggressively pursuing the integration of artificial intelligence across its ecosystem. The shift toward custom silicon is a critical step in managing the infrastructure demands of its social networks and virtual reality endeavors.

What to watch

  • The production timeline for the Iris chip beginning in September.
