San Francisco City Attorney Demands Removal of ‘Nudify’ Applications from App Stores

San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu has issued cease-and-desist letters to Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc., calling for the immediate removal of 13 specific applications from their respective digital marketplaces. The applications in question utilize artificial intelligence to digitally alter photos and “nudify” subjects without their consent.

The legal action targets the availability of these tools on the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. Authorities assert that these applications not only violate privacy standards but also facilitate non-consensual sexual imagery. The letters demand that the tech giants take swift action to eliminate the apps and implement stricter measures to prevent similar software from being distributed in the future.

This development arrives amid a volatile trading day for both technology leaders. Apple Inc. (AAPL) saw its stock decline by 1.2%, with shares trading at $330.80. Meanwhile, Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) experienced a steeper drop of 2.96%, with shares falling to $346.93. Both companies hold massive market capitalizations, with Apple valued at approximately $4.63 trillion and Alphabet at $4.37 trillion.

As primary gatekeepers for mobile software, Apple and Google face increasing scrutiny regarding content moderation and the safety of their ecosystems. The outcome of this legal pressure could prompt broader reviews of app store policies regarding AI-generated content and user safety.

What to watch

  • Official responses from Apple and Google regarding the removal of the 13 cited applications.
  • Potential updates to app review guidelines for AI-driven software on both platforms.
  • Upcoming earnings reports for commentary on platform moderation costs and regulatory risks.
