Microsoft and AMD Positioned for Long-Term Growth Amid Data Center Expansion

The technology sector continues to demonstrate strength relative to broader market indices. The Nasdaq-100 has historically outperformed the S&P 500 over one-, five-, and 10-year periods, a trend analysts suggest may persist due to the rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI). Investment firm Morgan Stanley has highlighted data center construction as a significant driver of global economic expansion, projecting that associated spending could approach $3 trillion by 2028.

This anticipated infrastructure build-out creates a potential tailwind for established technology giants. Two companies frequently cited in this context are Microsoft Corporation and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., both of which are deeply integrated into the AI supply chain through software infrastructure and semiconductor hardware.

Microsoft, currently valued with a market capitalization exceeding $2.86 trillion, plays a central role in the AI ecosystem through its cloud and enterprise software offerings. The company’s shares recently traded at $401.10, up 0.22% from the previous close. As a leader in software infrastructure, Microsoft provides the platforms and services that enterprises utilize to deploy AI workloads at scale.

On the hardware side, Advanced Micro Devices operates as a critical supplier of the processing power required for these data centers. With a market cap of approximately $901 billion, AMD’s stock moved to $500.94, a gain of 1.34% today. The company specializes in AI accelerators, graphics processing units (GPUs), and microprocessors across its Data Center, Client, and Gaming segments, supplying the necessary compute performance for modern AI applications.

What to watch

  • Data center capital expenditure reports from hyperscale cloud providers for 2025 and beyond.
