Nvidia Backs Marvell as UALink Standard Challenges NVLink Dominance

The competitive landscape for artificial intelligence infrastructure is witnessing a complex strategic shift. Marvell Technology is actively supporting the development of UALink, an open interconnect standard intended to provide AI chipmakers with an alternative to Nvidia‘s proprietary NVLink fabric. Marvell’s role involves creating technology that enables customers to construct custom accelerators, switches, and scale-up networks utilizing this open standard.

Despite the standard’s potential to reduce reliance on Nvidia’s ecosystem, reports indicate a significant financial commitment from the graphics giant. A proposed investment totaling $2 billion would see Nvidia funding a company that is instrumental in building a rival connectivity solution. Following the investment, reports suggest the expectation is for Marvell to ensure its devices and network infrastructure remain compatible with Nvidia’s existing network.

Currently, Nvidia holds a substantial market lead in AI infrastructure. However, the push for open standards like UALink highlights the industry’s desire for greater flexibility in data center design. Marvell’s involvement places it at the center of this tension between proprietary ecosystems and open interoperability.

In the market today, Marvell Technology shares are trading lower. The stock is priced at $206.26, representing a decline of 7.68% from the previous close of $223.43. The company holds a market capitalization of approximately $185.13 billion. Meanwhile, Nvidia is trading at $212.50, up 0.32% from the prior session, with a market cap exceeding $5.13 trillion.
