Epic Games to Introduce AI-Driven Conversations to Fortnite
Apple Inc. partner and video game developer Epic Games is preparing to launch a new suite of artificial intelligence features for its popular title, Fortnite. Set to go live on July 30, the update will empower game creators to build experiences featuring non-player characters (NPCs) capable of conversation using AI-generated voice technology.
To facilitate this shift toward interactive storytelling, Epic is releasing a library of 36 pre-built characters. These digital avatars are designed with specific personas and consistent vocal characteristics, allowing creators to easily integrate them into custom islands without building dialogue trees from scratch. The roster of available characters includes familiar faces from the Fortnite universe such as Agent Jonesy, the banana-like Peely, Fishstick, and Cuddle Team Leader.
This move marks an evolution of the technology Epic previously deployed through a collaboration with the estate of James Earl Jones. That earlier test featured a Darth Vader NPC capable of realistic speech, establishing a foundation for the broader rollout of conversational AI agents.
The integration of large language models (LLMs) into the Fortnite ecosystem represents a significant technical expansion for the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). By lowering the barrier to creating complex dialogue interactions, Epic aims to increase the variety and depth of user-generated content within its platform.
