Apple Inc. rival OpenAI is reportedly preparing to enter the consumer hardware market with a portable smart speaker. According to a new report from Bloomberg, the artificial intelligence company is developing a screenless device designed to function as a dedicated interface for conversing with ChatGPT.

The device is said to be equipped with a rechargeable battery, allowing for portability within the home. While it lacks a display, the speaker is expected to utilize a camera and various sensors to interpret its surroundings, aiming to provide a contextualized AI companion experience. Additionally, the hardware is rumored to include smart home control capabilities.

This development emerges amid recent legal tensions between OpenAI and Apple. Apple recently filed a lawsuit accusing OpenAI of misappropriating hardware secrets, allegations that OpenAI has publicly denied, stating it is unaware of any evidence supporting the claims. The move into hardware puts OpenAI in direct competition with established players in the smart home sector, including Apple’s HomePod and Amazon’s Echo lineup.
